Summary: The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) makes operating loans of up to $5,000 to eligible individual rural youths age 10 through 20 to finance income-producing, agriculture-related projects. The project must be of modest size, educational, and initiated, developed and carried out by rural youths participating in 4-H clubs, FFA, or a similar organization.

Decision Making Tools for Northeast Farmer-Feeders

This project revolved around farmer-feeder operations defined as such because they both feed cattle and raise crops used for feed. A brief needs assessment was contucted to identify the challenges farmer-feeders face in their operations. They were surveyed on various aspects of their operations from marketing decisions to record keeping systems to production practices.

The risk management topics addressed in this project included product and enterprise diversification, understanding of economic risks associated with new product technology, financial and production records and analysis.
