| PROJECT SUMMARY |
Three states along the Gulf coast--Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi--had more than 1400 owner-operators in the green industry in 2002. They generated more than $300 million in sales revenue that year. Natural disasters are frequent occurences in the region and directly affect many producers. The green industry is a consumer-driven market and is a vertically integrated industry. Market disruptions caused by nature or by man can result in the loss of productive capacity critical to the resumption and continuation of the operation.
This project was an effort to provide the Gulf coast green industry, which includes nurseries, greenhouses, floriculture operations, and sod production, with a tool to help them through emergencies or disasters. The project addressed financial and operating risks that may arise in the absence of a plan to continue operations through market and production interruptions. |
