PROJECT SUMMARY
The objective of this project is to develop market risk management decision analysis spreadsheets that are a concise and accessible tool for agricultural producers, lenders and extension agents and to disseminate the tools to the relevant audiences. Revenues from existing and potential marketing assistance programs create new opportunities for farmers to use both loan deficiency payment receipts and existing market management strategies to improve their farm income by considering both simultaneously. The existing and new farm bills change the ‘rules of the marketing game’ for both lenders and farmers. This is especially true in regards to corn, wheat, soybean and cotton production, all of which are important crops in South Carolina. Additionally, since feeder cattle production is an important practice or alternative on many SC farms, beef cattle market risk analysis will also be addressed. This project will illustrate how combinations of crop and livestock marketing strategies interplay with firm needs and government revenues, which can aid in improving overall farm income and reduce its year-to-year variability.
