| PROJECT SUMMARY |
This project is aimed at smaller-scale, minority Hispanic farmers and ranchers in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. This area represents 21% of the Hispanic farm/ranch operations in Texas and 6% of the Hispanic operators in the United States.
A collaborative project is proposed between staff from the Cooperative Extension Program at Prairie View A&M University and Texas Cooperative Extension.
A successful collaborative project in 2002 led to the linking of the FARM Assistance program (Texas Cooperative Extension) and Prairie View’s Small Farmer Outreach Training and Technical Assistance Program in South Texas. A number of SFOTTAP clients were directed to and participated in the FARM Assistance program free of charge. In addition, presentations and materials by project staff in a recordkeeping workshop and Risk Management Education conference reached a number of Hispanic growers with risk management information and recommendations. This has created a based of awareness that we now propose to leverage with continued recruitment of SFOTTAP clients for free FARM Assistance analyses and a proposed livestock marketing workshop. |
