PROJECT SUMMARY
The target audience for this project is the cotton, rice, grain and livestock farmers of Louisiana. They are primarily concentrated in Southwest, Central, Northeast, and Red River Regions of Louisiana. There are approximately 27,200 farmers in these regions. The average farm size is 289 acres. This project will focus on teaching farmers and agricultural lenders farm management and marketing strategies that will enhance farm profitability and minimize risk of financial loss. Farmers will be taught to target a desired level of net income consistent with the potential of their resource base and market conditions, then use the appropriate risk management strategies to achieve this goal and minimize the probability of disastrous losses. A detailed risk management manual will be developed. Seminars will be presented to both farmers and agicultural lenders in target regions. The teaching material will be available on the departmental Farm Management Website.
