| PROJECT SUMMARY |
Budgets are an integral part of planning and risk analysis for both organic and conventional agricultural production systems. Business managers (including small, part-time and beginning producers), lending institutions, stat/federal service providers, government entities, agricultural support industries, educators, Extension specialists, and legal advisors are all interested in the cost estimates and resource needs outlined in budgets. Additionally, demands from these audiences for specialty enterprise budgets are increasing. This project built on the synergies of 6-Land-Grant universities, standardized methodologies and coordinated the expertise of the institutions’ agricultural economists and horticulturalists.
The project developed a comprehensive set of enterprise budgets specifically for organic vegetable production. The organic publication was used to compliment vegetables and fruit and nuts budgets that were being developed for the southeast region. This project provided resources to an underserved audience in the midst of budgetary crises and reduced FTE’s at Land-Grant colleges and universities respectively.
