| PROJECT SUMMARY |
| Through extensive research Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) has determined that a large market opportunity exists for southern Appalachian farmers. To address this potential and assist farmers in reaching new markets, ASAP developed a regional branding initiative, Appalachian Grown. Working with the region´s largest retailers, such as the Ingles grocery chain, ASAP is opening up new market opportunities. In order for farmers to be successful in these markets they need tools, trainings, and one-on-one planning assistance to best manage risk. Producers must be able to complete business planning activities, market assessments, understand food safety rules, access federal conservation programs, and be aware of other market critical requirements. Through this project, ASAP developed new risk management resources and held workshops in northwest NC and northern GA and at ASAP’s Marketing Opportunity for Farmers Conference in central western NC. ASAP also conducted 70 one-on-one farm business planning and market assessments with farmers. |
