PROJECT SUMMARY
Collaborators have observed that selection of professional advisors is often a hurdle to farm transition.. A 2005 survey found that fewer than 7% of NC operators have consulted a professional about their retirement planning, a basic element of estate planning and farm transfer. This project will help guide farmers, landlords, and their families into productive relationships with competent professional advisors by providing training to advisors (attorneys, accountants, financial planners) and recruiting them into a “speakers bureau” to participate in local producer training efforts. This farmer education will follow the updating and re-publication of Planning the Future of Your Farm: A Workbook on Farm Transfer Decisions, which will guide the agendas for workshops and presentations in Virginia and North Carolina. Presenters will include farmers sharing experiences with effective (and ineffective) professionals. Workshops and presentations will network participants into a growing professional advisor referral list and pro-bono program of initial consultation.
