PROJECT SUMMARY
This project was designed to reduce the financial and production risks to livestock producers that result from a lack of record keeping.

Participants are primarily producers from a southwestern Indian Reservation. Participation in workshops increased awareness of the need for record keeping and ability to use record keeping tools, such as record books and computers. Each of the 4 livestock associations is implementing a written record system, while producers are still learning to use records software. As a result of the project, the Tribe and its livestock associations registered for USDA premise identification numbers and have applied for funding to implement an animal tracking system. These steps will allow the producers to keep better livestock records, which will improve their ability to market their cattle and improve herd health and productivity. They will also be more prepared for changes in the livestock industry, such as a mandatory Animal Identification System.
