Summary
PROJECT SUMMARY
Yuma County, Arizona, produces nearly 95% of all the leafy vegetables sold in the US from November through April, and is a vital $800 million industry for the region. However, Southwest agriculture is currently faced with a drastic reduction in its agricultural labor force which is cause for increased concern and better management of this emerging risk. In fact, a recent grower survey identified that mediating the pressing labor shortage as a top priority. We propose to survey 500 field workers to determine the nature of immigrant labor efficiency, retention, longevity and recruitment. Following a collection of meetings, workshops and conferences, approximately 100 growers and managers will develop a strategic labor plan for improving human risk both on the farm and within the industry. The outcomes of this project will target potential solutions to a problem with national significance and assist local growers who face increasing risk to their operation.
